Antarctic Marine Life Under Threat From Warming Seas, New Predators
ScienceDaily (Feb. 24, 2008) Predatory crabs and fish are poised to return to warming Antarctic waters for the first time in millions of years, threatening the shallow marine ecosystems surrounding Antarctica. Antarctic marine communities resemble the primeval waters of millions years ago because modern predators - crabs and fish - are missing. .
Is hybridoma production about to take a quantum leap forward?
Two cultures derived from the same culture of a stable hybridoma clone were grown, one in NPD and the other in DI based medium supplemented with 3 percent FCS. Before seeding the cells were washed in serum-free media to verify the removal of any residual serum. During a period of two weeks the supernatants were collected as indicated and the cells were counted on the same day. The cultures were fed on the 4th and 10th day and medium was placed in the cultures on day 6. Although the cells in DI culture proliferated normally under these conditions, they failed to produce measurable quantities of antibody. Credit: Natalie Gavrilov-Yusim .

I agreed to the match-up. What I didn't realize was that it was all part of Bryant;s own plan to desegregate his program. Despite his popularity, he'd never been able to do it before, despite his desire to. He'd expressed to me that he'd wanted to do it for years. I can't say that I knew Bear's intentions fully at the time, but I did suspect it. It was a delicate situation and required just the right timing; but if any man understands how to do something like that, it was Bear Bryant." "I can say with absolute certainty that Bear Bryant wanted to integrate his football program long before that game," said longtime college football broadcaster Keith Jackson. McKay and Fertig were on their second or fourth round of drinks when Bryant arrived. A martini and history followed.
High-tech tinkerers on the rise
The reason you're going to see more and more people doing it is because they've always wanted to be able to fiddle - but the technology was daunting." That's changing, as do-it-yourself gadgetry becomes more accessible to people who have never even held a soldering iron. Paul Badger, an instructor at the Rhode Island School of Design who runs Modern Device Co. out of his house, creates cheap microcontroller boards, called "Bare Bones Boards," that take off from a popular microcontroller called Arduino. Badger's art students work on things like a wig that can flip up and down and back and forth, or experiment with lighting; the Arduino microcontroller is often used in other artistic products, such as clothing melded with computing, or basic robotics for artists.
