| Corrections and clarifications
A list in the Sports section Thursday of the National Football League's AFC and NFC statistical leaders was based on games played through Dec. 17, not through last weekend. Corrected statistics appear today. 12/25/07 A review of the movie "The Great Debaters" in Tuesday's Cue section incorrectly says that teen actor Denzel Whitaker is the real-life son of actor Forest Whitaker. 12/20/07 Because of incorrect information provided by a Milwaukee County Zoo spokeswoman, an article Tuesday incorrectly stated that zoo official Bruce Beehler led a research expedition in Indonesia on which a giant rat and a tiny opossum were identified. A different Bruce Beehler led the expedition. 12/19/07 A panel of three pictures that accompanied an article Tuesday about recalled toys and their effect on charity gift drives incorrectly included pictures of two toys that have not been subject to Consumer Product Safety Commission recalls.
Perchlorate pact at hand - at last
Rialto and San Bernardino are finally on the cusp of settling their portion of the perchlorate-cleanup lawsuit Rialto filed in 2004. That suit named not just San Bernardino, but the U.S. Department of Defense and some 40 companies that Rialto wants to hold responsible for the perchlorate contamination in its groundwater. The federal lawsuit is scheduled to go to trial in October, but if county supervisors approve the settlement that Rialto City Council signed onto last week, the county will no longer be among the defendants. That's good. We hate to see local governments suing each other, pitting one set of taxpayers' money against another in legal fees, instead of working out a suitable accommodation. In this case, far better to spend money on cleaning up the contamination than on dueling lawyers.

Stop Sign? Not in Her Vocabulary!
The actress, also appearing in Showtime's "Weeds," is smokin' hot these days, as high a dramatic highlight as the corn once soared in the mythical Kansas town in which her CBS series is set. If Bonnie Richmond were a real-life neighbor, would the actress who plays her go over to borrow a cup of some radioactive sugar? Would she confide in her? "Absolutely," says Stern. "There's a strange phenomenon of people choosing to confide in deaf people; I know I'm not alone in this." A willing ear? "I've had people tell me their life stories at random events like birthday parties or when I'm having a drink at a bar -- even on the dance floor at clubs." Direct and dynamic, Stern doesn't dance around any topics. "My whole family is like that," she says of her parents and brother and sister, who are "forever curious about other people and their lives, which probably adds to that sense of profound attention." .
