| ST. JOHN: Fasting friend inspires action
I'm not talking about a not-eating-meat-on-Friday fast, or an I'm-gonna-give-up-red-wine-for-40-days-but-still-drink-white-wine fast. No, he's doing an honest-to-goodness, Mahatma Gandhi-type fast- nothing but water. Fasting is a method of religious observance, penitence and purification which is practiced in several religious faiths. I am of the Protestant persuasion, so I will focus mostly on Protestant fasting. Fasting was an option for the early Christians, and later became a requirement. In the early church the typical fast lasted 40 hours. It was later changed to 40 days. The 40-day fast in the early Christian church allowed one meal per day. My friend is not allowing himself even one meal. He is on a nothing-but-water fast for the entire 40 days. As I write he is in the 20th day of the fast and seems to be doing well.
No sign of slowing down: Ont. man, 85, sets street-racing record
An 85-year-old man has sped into the record books as the oldest person charged under Ontario's street-racing legislation. An officer on patrol north of Toronto spotted an Oldsmobile Intrigue zipping through the eastbound lanes of Highway 407 on Wednesday morning, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Cam Woolley told CBCNews.ca on Thursday. She tried to catch up to the vehicle in her fully marked cruiser and "make herself obvious" by signalling to the driver, Woolley said. But the driver didn't seem to notice her, and picked up speed as he cut across lanes. By the time the car reached Keele Street, it was clocked at 161 kilometres an hour, Woolley said. He said wet, icy roads made the roads even more dangerous. The officer got caught behind traffic, but eventually pulled the 85-year-old Thornhill man over.
State looking to smokers to finance health care law
A $1 increase would bring it to $6.41, or about 32 cents per cigarette. Harwich resident Carol Hughes said the price hike wouldn't keep her from smoking. "I won't stop, but I would have to smoke less," she said, working at a Christy's in Dennisport on Route 28. Hughes said she used to smoke 10 packs a week, but as state taxes have risen, she's reduced it to five packs a week. "To me, they are forcing you to stop smoking," Hughes said. Driven by health careThe cost of the state's new health care law is driving the cigarette tax debate. Since last year, 300,000 state residents have signed up for private or state subsidized health care plans. Gov. Deval Patrick proposed spending $400 million more on health care in the 2009 fiscal budget, in part as a result of rising enrollment in the state's subsidized health insurance programs.
