Crackdown on rowdy drinkers

The Evening News revealed earlier this month how at least one complaint a day about noisy smokers is being made to the local authority on the issue. Councillor Sheila Gilmore, the city's antisocial behaviour leader, said: "The bylaw is not just for the city centre, it's intended to be used across the city. "In some other parts of the country it is against the law completely to drink outdoors unless in pavement cafes, but we didn't want to be seen as killjoys. "The police have told us that their officers will use their own judgment in every individual case and that a commonsense approach will be taken." A spokeswoman for Lothian and Borders Police told the Evening News: "We will be duty-bound to enforce the laws as set down by the Scottish Executive, working alongside the council, but we would not like to make any further comment at this stage.

Webber has his version of feud with O'Brien

OAKLAND, Calif. — As it turns out, the Chris Webber/Jim O'Brien Chronicles have a longer shelf life than most reality shows.

After the Golden State Warriors' shootaround yesterday, Webber wrote the latest fascinating installment, referring to O'Brien's Jan.21 comments as "a total lie."

To review: Webber played roughly half a season for O'Brien's Sixers after being acquired from Sacramento in February 2005. To say that they did not mesh would understate the situation.

O'Brien, now coaching Indiana, said that when Webber arrived, he said, 'Coach, I don't do the low-post thing anymore.' We made a major trade to bring in a 6-11 guy. I said, 'Yes, you do.'"

O'Brien also said: "We wanted to blitz [trap] the pick-and-roll, and it became apparent he couldn't do that."

And: "Webber didn't practice at all that year prior to coming to us.

SCERA honors local art scene

At a $95-a-plate fundraiser in Orem on Saturday, supporters of the arts gathered for dinner, a silent auction and a live auction to benefit the SCERA's Endowment for the Arts and its arts programs.

Last year's event garnered more than $25,000.

This year's black-tie gala was emceed by retired KSL-TV newscaster Dick Nourse. Roasted chicken breasts and herbed new potatoes, followed by blueberry cheesecake, were served on black table clothes overlaid with metallic silver.

During the live auction following dinner, participants, using star-topped wands to bid, paid $525 for an autographed lithograph of John Stockton, $350 for an iPhone, $500 for a Liz Lemon Swindle print, and $300 each for two family portrait packages, among other items sold.

More than 20 people were honored with Star awards for their contributions to the arts in Utah County.
